This nostalgic backyard family session is the perfect example of how thinking outside of the typical box of family portraits can allow for photos that are extra special and personal. I had the best time taking these casual backyard family photos for my good friends Steph & Justin from ToneMedia! We wanted to create family photos that captured their “every day” at-home moments. Backyard hang outs with bikes and scooters, bubbles and swings, and drippy ice cream cones felt like them in this season. So that’s exactly what we captured!

Family photos don’t always have to be formal portraits where everyone is perfectly neat and tidy. In fact, I’d argue that photos that are less staged, more natural, full of personality, and maybe a little messy, sometimes capture the spirit of the season a little better. Real moments captured in a space your family is already comfortable is a recipe for family photos that you’ll always treasure. Twenty years from now when you want to remember what those summers felt like when your kids were little, you’ll be able to come home to those memories through your photos. That’s my mission!
